Who are we?
Our names are Casey Alexander and Catherine Schur. We are currently seniors in the Global Ecology Studies Program (GESP) at Poolesville High School. This is a rigorous program dedicated to environmental education and preservation. As a culminating senior project in the GESP program, we are required to pursue an area of interest related to an environmental issue and in effect, help the environment and our community in some way. We chose to raise awareness of the use of biodiesel. We have met with Council Member Nancy Floreen and worked with our sponsor Thomas Butz of Chesapeake Green Fuels to promote biodiesel as a "green" alternative to diesel fuel.

Our Project
Why should firefighters convert their engines to biodiesel?
- Firefighters have a higher than average incidence of cancer.  Using biodiesel reduces the carcinogens that they breathe.
- Most fire stations have a fire pole that leads to their vehicles.  And most fire stations have their sleeping quarters upstairs.  Using biodiesel will diminish emissions going into the fire station living area.
- Using biodiesel reduces emissions.  This is particularly important as you load someone in an ambulance.
- No conversion is needed to use biodiesel.
What is our project?
Our goal is to raise awareness of the use of biodiesel. As the final product, we hope to convince the firefighters at the Beallsville Fire Department to convert their engines to biodiesel.
